The Nattukottai Nagarthars are native to Tamil Nadu, India, commonly known as Nattukottai Chettiar or Nagarathar. They are a mercantile community that are traditionally involved in commerce, banking and money lending. Nagarathars are well known for their temples and the lavish ancestral houses they built in Chettinad. Nagarathars have a history of migration and trade that spans over many centuries and countries. They were originally from Naganadu, an ancient land that was destroyed by natural calamities. They then moved to Kanchipuram, Poompuhar, and finally Karaikudi. They were also salt traders and itinerant merchants who travelled to various parts of Asia for business.
