North American Nagarathar Business Entrepreneurship Network (NANBEN), is a non-profit organization that promotes entrepreneurship and facilitates business networking among the Nagarathar community in North America. NANBEN’s mission is to evoke the entrepreneurial traits of our Nagarathar community and facilitate & encourage Nagarathars to become successful entrepreneurs through mentorship, education, networking, incubation, and investment. ​​​

About the Speaker:
Manu Lakshmanan, PhD, is Director, Operations Strategy at a private equity-backed medical device company and a former management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Manu is the founder of an interview coaching company that focuses on case interviews used in assessing candidate problem-solving skills at consulting firms, and has also authored a book on this topic, titled "The Elements of the Case Interview".

The session will be moderated by Prabakar Murugappan. Prabakar is a product leader and angel investor, who currently leads the 3D metal printing software products team at HP. Prior to HP, he was the chief product officer at Avataar.Me and has previously held leadership roles at Autodesk. Prabakar also serves on the executive committee at NANBEN.

Nagarathars have traditionally been entrepreneurs, but had transitioned to employment for the last 50+ years. However, we're now starting get back into entrepreneurship around the world. A very encouraging statistic is that 70% of NANBEN Members have indicated that they are "aspiring to be an entrepreneur". We are planning to host several different entrepreneurs in our INSIGHTS series with the goal of learning from them, and inspiring more of us to do the same. What better way to get started than learning and getting inspired from those who have tread that path?

In this session, Meiy and Ooma Palaniappan will share their story about how they went about launching Tantra - a franchise store selling the famous Tantra brand of T-Shirts (imported from India) in Seattle. They started 7 months ago, and are very much in the initial phases of their entrepreneurial journey. They will share their insights into what is involved with starting a new venture, the trade offs they had to make both professionally and personally, and the lessons they have learned so far and take your questions.
